to my celtic friends.....
in prepping for my alice class, i'm finding plenty of mythological examples of girls going down 'rabbit holes' into the under/otherworld in classical mythology, but not so much in celtic/norse stuff. it seems as if it's much more prevalent for men to be lured or snatched away, often by females. am i missing something? got any examples of celtic alice tales for me?

Well now. I can't think of any Alice tales in Celtic myths, however, women are, in general, more susceptible to being 'taken by the fairies' then men are. I have a great book called 'The Cooper's Wife is Missing.' It's set in the early 1900's in rural Ireland. A woman by the name of Bridget Cleary (the coopers wife) goes missing, and is found, a few weeks later, dead, buried, and horribly burned. It later turns out that she was thought to be taken by fairies, and was put through a week-long trial to drive the fairies out. The final and most drastic step was to put her living body on the grate and light a fire under her. This was suppose to burn the fairy out, but ended up killing her. This is a true story. A very good if a bit gruesome book.
I'll take a look through my books, and see if I can find anything else helpful. If you want to borrow the book for the class, I think we're seeing you on Tuesday. Good luck!

I couldn't find any in any of my books! However, i have lots of stories of women being turned into things. Want those? I've got a deer, a stone, a tree, and probably a few others. I've also got one where the women is fairy, and agrees to marry a mortal until he strikes her 'three causeless blows'

Let me know if you're interested... :P Sorry I'm not more help!

Wait! I've remembered something I read a while back..... there are two couples, a mother and her lover, and her son and his wife. The mother is a sorceress, and so is the older man. The son goes into a mist covered castle and rings a bell and vanishes into the other realm. His mother follows, and they have a hard time in a castle where everyone becomes mice at night. Anyway, its a good one. You might be able to find it using that? If it sounds like what you need that is.

Well, for Norse/Germanic, there is always the Frau Holle folktale, where teh girl goes down a well and into a different land and lives with Holle (aka Holda) for awhile.

Might try asking [info]alfrecht. If anyone can find Celtic stuff relevant to that, it'll be him!
