Current mood:inexplicable

le sigh
i asked the family of my working student to care for the farm while we're in bermuda, and they agreed and asked me to set the rate. my first (low) offer was met uncomfortably, so i jacked it up the going business rate of $100 per day which everyone was happy with.
then i got an offer from another friend to do it for free.
$700 vs free, and the free folks are actually a better fit for us, worry-wise.
no contest.
so i broke the news to my working student and her mom, which was not received well. this morning came the mostly-expected angry denunciation email about my 'inexplicable' decision.
i will answer her with love, because i know they are hurt and disappointed.
but to you, my lj friends, i have to ask 'inexplicable'?
what's so friggin' inexplicable about $700 or free?
:/ khairete

Aww, they were probably already talking about what to do with that $700. Times is tough. :D

That's what I was thinking. But they should understand that since times are indeed tough, free wins hands down over $700.

Oh, I agree, but I might've given them fifty dollars for the disappointment.

They'll get over it! If you didn't sign some written contract, no one is going to blame you for saving 7 Ben Franklins.

you might point out that while they may have needed the money, you also need to save money and that the high offer was going to leave you strapped.

since they are already pissed, you could point out that the greed factor helped determine your decision.

the economics work both ways.

Well, obviously, you just existed to provide them a source of summer income, silly. (runs, rapidly away)

See, I think that it sucks for them, but is good for you. Not only do you save $700, you also get a totally worry free week away.

You might mention that to them, that someone offered to watch the farm for free, and frankly, you're more comfortable with these people anyway.
Good luck!
Maybe see you tonight at Poetry Night!

You say it all in the last 3 lines and when the initial disappointment wears off I'm sure they'll come round and it will be totally explicable to them. If you are going to have house sitters they need to be either complete professionals who you need never have any contact with in future or friends you are genuinely happy to share your space with anything else is a fraught situation that is likely to damage the "friendship" anyway
